This qualification is part of the Community Services Training Package. It reflects the role of workers in a range of education settings, including public and independent schools and community education settings, who provide assistance and support to teachers and students under broad-based supervision.

Structure:

17 units: 12 core; 5 elective

Subjects you can Study:

Core: Support behaviour of children and young people; Comply with legislative, policy and industrial requirements in the education environment; Assist implementation of planned educational programs; Contribute to student education in all developmental domains; Contribute to organisation and management of classroom or centre; Support the development of literacy and oral language skills; Support the development of numeracy skills; Work effectively with students and colleagues; Contribute to the health and safety of students; Support students with additional needs in the classroom environment; Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers; Work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. Plus electives.

Where work involves a specific focus on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander and/or culturally diverse clients or communities, one or both of the following electives is recommended: Work effectively with culturally diverse clients and co-workers; Work effectively with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. The following elective is required in some jurisdictions to meet legislative requirements for mandatory reporting of child abuse: Identify and respond to children and young people at risk. In some jurisdictions, it is a condition of employment that Education Support Workers are competent in basic first aid.

Training is conducted at ten colleges (Bankstown, Campbelltown, Chullora, Granville, Lidcombe, Liverpool, Macquarie Fields, Miller, Padstow and Wetherill Park), in workplaces, community locations and in overseas classrooms. The Institute continues to improve links with universities and schools to enhance pathways and provide maximum recognition of students' knowledge and skills.
