The Bachelor of Social Science provides students with an understanding of society and its institutions, and the way in which they impact on people and their lives. It actively promotes the values of social justice, human rights, environmental sustainability, and cross-cultural awareness. The degree develops students' capabilities to analyse social arrangements critically, to identify social problems and to envision strategies for change. It also enables students to gain skills in working effectively with people from diverse backgrounds and in many different organisational settings.
Structure
24 units. As well as the majors, students can select up to two streams (4 units) including development studies, cultural studies, and welfare studies. Some units in this course are only available to study by distance education. The course includes an optional professional placement unit for on-the-job experience in a wide range of settings, such as government departments and non-government community organisations.

Standard entry requirements

Graduates may attain membership with the Australian Community Workers Association (ACWA) (dependent upon units selected).
Study pathways
This course offers intermediate awards (early exit points) at Diploma and Associate Degree levels. An Honours year is available for eligible graduates. Graduates can undertake the Master of Social Work (Professional Qualifying) to qualify as social workers in Australia.
