The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) provides students with the capacity to engage in innovative approaches to teaching and learning in a secondary school, as well as the ability to reflect on the social, ethical and professional expectations that the rise of technology brings to the classroom and the nature of learning. The degree combines general education studies, teaching methods (curriculum studies), and professional experience. Students may choose to specialise in at least two teaching disciplines. In addition, students are afforded three professional placements at a secondary school, a total of 80 days. As a result, graduates are not only qualified to teach Years 7 to 12 but also prepared as future educational leaders and innovators.

  • 400 credit points comprising: 11 Core units (162.5 credit points)
  • 3 Professional Experience units of study (37.5 credit points)
  • 16 discipline studies units (200 credit points)

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 or equivalent: VCE prerequisites: Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 25 in English (or equivalent) or 30 in English (EAL)
  • And Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 20 in any Mathematics. All applicants must sit and achieve an appropriate standard on a selection test used to assess an applicant's non-academic personal and professional attributes. Applicants applying to transfer from another initial teacher education course must disclose all LANTITE attempts.All enrolled students must maintain a current Working with Children Check (from the appropriate State Authority). A Police Check may also be required by a school prior to a placement. All applicants (both standard entry and non-year 12 entry) must sit the CASPer test.

Recognition

Graduates will be eligible for provisional registration by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as secondary teachers, and by reciprocal arrangements with teacher education authorities in other states, they are eligible for provisional registration in all Australian states and territories.

Study pathways

Pathways allow students to progress from one qualification to another where the first course is recognised as an entry requirement and/or provides advanced standing to the second. Credit is granted in recognition of previous study and/or experience and allows students to gain advanced standing towards their course. Applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
