The Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Science offers a teaching qualification with the ability to teach science disciplines. Students engage in innovative approaches to teaching and learning in a secondary school. Students also learn to reflect on the social, ethical and professional expectations that the rise of technology brings to the classroom and to the nature of learning. The degree includes three work placements at a secondary school (80 days in total).

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 or equivalent
  • VCE prerequisites: Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 25 in English (or equivalent) or 30 in English (EAL)
  • And Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 20 in any Mathematics. Completion or partial completion of an approved tertiary qualification (including certificates, diplomas, advanced diplomas, associate degrees and degrees). Additional performance criteria and prerequisite requirements may also apply. Applicants applying to transfer from another initial teacher education course must disclose all LANTITE (National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students) attempts. Applicants who have unsuccessfully attempted the LANTITE three or more times will not be eligible to receive an offer. All applicants must maintain a current Working with Children Check (from the appropriate State Authority) and a current Police Check throughout the duration of the course. All applicants (both standard entry and non-year 12 entry) must sit the CASPer test. All applicants must demonstrate suitable English language proficiency for successful completion of the course.

Recognition

Graduates will be eligible for provisional registration by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as secondary teachers, and by reciprocal arrangements with teacher education authorities in other states, they are eligible for provisional registration in all Australian states and territories.

Study pathways

Pathways allow students to progress from one qualification to another where the first course is recognised as an entry requirement and/or provides advanced standing to the second. Credit is granted in recognition of previous study and/or experience and allows students to gain advanced standing towards their course. Applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
