The Bachelor of Laws / Bachelor of Business Information Systems offers students a course focused on commercial law with emphasis on intellectual property law. As the only double degree in Victoria with this specialisation, students learn about trademarks, patents and designs, copyright, the prohibition of misleading or deceptive conduct and competition law. The course also teaches students to be entrepreneurial thinkers and provides them with the skills and knowledge essential to business management and operations. Students complete law-related professional experience placements at organisations in Australia or overseas. Students are also introduced to the practical aspects of legal practice through moot court scenarios and advocacy exercises.

Structure

  • 500 credit points comprising:500 credit points comprising: 20 core Law Units (250 credit points)
  • 4 Law electives (50 credit points)
  • 3 Professional Experiences in law (0 credit points)
  • 16 Business Information Systems units (200 credit points) - this include 8 core Business Information Systems units (100 credit points) and 8 units of study from an Information Systems major (100 credit points)

Standard entry requirements

  • Year 12 or equivalent
  • The Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or its equivalent, such as an interstate or international Year 12 qualification. Completion or partial completion of a degree. Units 3 and 4: a minimum study score of 25 in English (or equivalent) or 30 in English (EAL). Additional performance criteria and prerequisite requirements may also apply. VCE Units 3 and 4 : a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics. English language requirements - satisfactory completion of one of the following: Swinburne's English for Academic Purposes (EAP 5 Advanced level) with overall 70%, all skills 65%
  • Minimum IELTS overall band of 6.5 (Academic Module) with no individual band below 6.0
  • TOEFL iBT (internet-based) minimum score of 79 with a reading band no less than 18 and writing band no less than 20
  • Pearson (PTE) minimum score of 58 (no communicative skills less than 50)
  • Any other equivalent assessment of English language proficiency. Note: A prerequisite for many courses, the Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) can now be done on campus in Hawthorn.

Recognition

The Bachelor of Laws satisfies the academic requirements for admission to practice as a lawyer in the Victorian and Australian Federal legal systems as set by the Victorian Legal Admissions Board. Please be advised that non-academic requirements must also be satisfied for admission to practice and that no law degree allows graduates to practise straight away. The Bachelor of Business Information Systems has been accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) at professional level.

Study pathways

Pathways allow students to progress from one qualification to another where the first course is recognised as an entry requirement and/or provides advanced standing to the second. Credit is granted in recognition of previous study and/or experience and allows students to gain advanced standing towards their course. Applicants are assessed on a case-by-case basis.
