Established in 2004, Sydney Film School is a Registered Training Organisation. It is an independent film school offering a film production intensive for emerging filmmakers, focusing on storytelling through drama and documentary production. Governed by a board of international professionals and industry representatives (including Academy Award-winning producer Emile Sherman), the School encourages the exchange of international perspectives in all of its work, and welcomes overseas film students to study and work alongside Australian colleagues.

No tertiary entry scores or previous film experience are required for the Diploma of Screen and Media. The prerequisite for the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media is the Diploma or an equivalent level of production experience.
