TAFE Queensland North

TAFE Queensland North is part of the TAFE Queensland network; they promote the vision of Queenslanders excelling in learning, skilling and work for personal, community and economic prosperity.

For more than 130 years they have been delivering education and training across the state. They are now the single largest provider in the state of Queensland.

With 17 campuses located across northern Queensland, TAFE Queensland North extends from the Whitsundays on the east coast of Queensland, west to the Mount Isa region and far north to Bamaga and Thursday Island at the tip of the Cape York Peninsula. The largest of all the regions in Queensland they cover an area of over 520,000 square kilometres.

TAFE Queensland North is the result of an amalgamation between Cairns, Mount Isa and Townsville TAFE organisations. By harnessing the strong reputation each of these organisations have had in their communities, they are able to improve education and training to the great western and northern region of Queensland as a collaborative force.

Entry requirements for TAFE Queensland North

All applicants who meet the minimum entry requirements or competencies as specified in the current version of the published, accredited syllabus are deemed to be eligible for entry to the course. Achievement of the minimum stated entry requirements does not guarantee entry and is dependent on the availability of student places and the individual merit of applicants.

TAFE Queensland requires all students from non-English speaking backgrounds and students whose highest qualification is in a language other than English, to provide evidence of English proficiency. This can be demonstrated in the form of a TOEFL, IELTS or ASLPR English Proficiency test or a pass in Queensland Year 12 English or equivalent.

Applicants with an Overall Position (OP) from senior schooling will be selected on the basis of their OP. If it is necessary to differentiate between students within the same OP band, reference will be made to the Field Position specified for particular courses.

For students who do not have an Overall Position from senior schooling, selection will be based on achievement in all previous study (Board, Board Registered and TAFE Queensland subjects) recorded on the Senior Certificate, plus any relevant paid work experience equivalent to six months full-time employment.

Applicants without Queensland Year 12 or its equivalent will be assessed on their vocational and educational qualifications as per Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre standard assessment procedures. All these applicants are encouraged to sit a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).

Special consideration in terms of access to programs may be given on the basis of disability, equity and social justice. If applicants seek special consideration, full documentation should be provided to support their application.

Transfering your previous study credits

Students entering TAFE courses may be able to have credit granted towards a course, taking into account previous study, training, work experience and life experience. This will allow them to complete their study in a shorter period of time, without repeating work already done.

Before enrolling, potential students should talk to Institute staff to discuss what credit they may be able to obtain. In some cases staff will be able to grant credit where previous study matches the competencies/training outcomes of the course. In other cases, it may be necessary to do a more detailed assessment through a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process, particularly where there is other relevant experience to be taken into account.

Entitlement to credit does not guarantee a place in the course.

External study opportunities

TAFE Queensland North offers flexible study options. Students can choose to study part time, full time, through block training, externally, online, via workplace delivery and/or through recognition of prior learning.
