Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Petroleum) / Bachelor of Science

The University of Adelaide

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00123M

This program combines the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Petroleum) and the Bachelor of Science, to equip graduates with a multidisciplinary yet complementary skill-set and broad expertise that can be applied to a range of complex challenges. In this program, students study the concepts of petroleum engineering, and undertake a Geology and Geophysics and Applied Geology double major as part of the Science component. The degree builds a strong foundation of mathematics, physics, geology/geophysics, computer applications and engineering. With designated courses from both disciplines counted towards the double degree program, the degree can typically be completed in five years (full-time), compared with seven years if undertaken separately. At the end of the double degree, students graduate with two separate parchments; one for each degree. Combining two areas of study offers graduates not only a more diverse experience at university, but also greater scope of career prospects and a competitive edge in the job market.

Structure

This degree builds a strong foundation of mathematics, physics, geology, geophysics, computer applications and engineering principles. Over the course of the program, the subjects studied change from more general engineering topics to very specific petroleum and applied geology and geophysics-related topics. There is also a focus on management and business-related aspects. Students are required to complete 6 weeks of approved practical experience.

Subjects

  • Engineering-petroleum
  • Geology
  • Geophysics

Standard entry requirements

  • Prerequisites: SACE Stage 2 Mathematical Methods and Physics plus one of Specialist Mathematics or Chemistry
  • International Baccalaureate: either Mathematics (HL grade 3) and Physics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3)
  • Or Chemistry (SL grade 4/HL grade 3), Physics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3) and Mathematics (SL grade 4/HL grade 3). If Stage 2 studies were undertaken prior to 2017, the equivalent subject was known as Mathematical Studies.

Recognition

Graduates of the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Petroleum) qualify for professional membership of Engineers Australia.
