This program provides professional accreditation and entry to the engineering workforce at an advanced level in engineering specialisations: Biochemical, Biomedical, Chemical, Civil, Electrical, Environmental, Materials, Mechanical, Mechatronics, Software, Spatial and Structural. It offers six Engineering with Business specialisations, developed in collaboration with Melbourne Business School: Biomedical with Business, Chemical with Business, Civil with Business, Electrical with Business, Software with Business and Mechanical with Business. The program is internationally recognised in the world's leading economies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan and Singapore, allowing graduates to practice professionally in any of these countries. The program is also the first Australian engineering course to be accredited in Europe by EUR-ACE.

Standard entry requirements

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent with weighted average mark of 65%
  • At least 25 points of relevant tertiary-level maths and 25 points of relevant tertiary-level science (University of Melbourne subjects Linear Algebra and Calculus 2 are considered relevant tertiary-level mathematics). Individual streams have specific maths and science prerequisites.

Recognition

The Master of Engineering is accredited by Engineers Australia. The Master of Engineering (Spatial), (Biomedical with Business), (Electrical with Business) and (Software with Business) is provisionally accredited by Engineers Australia until sufficient students have graduated from the program. Changes to accreditation status will be backdated, enabling graduates to receive full accreditation when it is granted. The Master of Engineering is accredited by EUR-ACE, apart from the Master of Engineering (Software) and Master of Engineering (Software with Business), which are accredited by Euro-Inf and the Australian Computer Society (ACS). The Master of Engineering (Materials) is a new course launched in 2018. The Melbourne School of Engineering is seeking provisional accreditation for this course through Engineers Australia. The Melbourne School of Engineering has not yet sought accreditation with EUR-ACE. The Master of Engineering (Biochemical) and (Chemical) is accredited with IChemE.

Study pathways

Students who have completed the corresponding Engineering Systems major in the Bachelor of Biomedicine, Design or Science from the University of Melbourne will be eligible for one year advanced standing. Students with other undergraduate backgrounds that include engineering may also receive partial credit towards their program. School leavers applying for the bachelors of Biomedicine, Commerce, Design or Science at the University of Melbourne can secure a place in the Master of Engineering at the same time through the Graduate Degree Packages program, subject to meeting entry requirements.
