The Joint Medical Program (JMP) is a two stage five year program comprising of a Bachelor of Medical Science (stage one) and Doctor of Medicine (stage two), offered jointly in partnership by the University of Newcastle and the University of New England. The program consists of three phases across the five years where stage one comprises of Phase 1 and 2. Phase 1 focuses on the biomedical, behavioural and social sciences and is taught through problem based learning. In problem based learning tutorials, students learn about the body systems such as the cardiac and respiratory systems using clinical presentations as a trigger to guide the learning. The tutorials are supported by sessions in the laboratory, lectures from biomedical scientists or clinicians, and practical clinical skills teaching. During Phase 1, students will be introduced to the clinical environment with clinical placements in the hospital, nursing homes and general practice to practice history taking and clinical examinations.

Structure

288 credit points. Clinical exposure begins in first year and continues throughout the program. Candidates will be required to spend up to 2 semesters away from their university of enrolment while undertaking clinical placements. Time spent in the Year 3 Health Equity Selective and the Year 5 Primary Health Care Selective shall not be included in the minimum 2-semester clinical placement requirement. Candidates may elect to undertake placements of up to 2 years in an approved 'away' location. Candidates will be responsible for all costs associated with travel and accommodation for 'away' placements.

  • Admission to candidature is a highly competitive process, and shall be determined on the basis of previous Year 12 studies or higher education qualifications
  • Results of the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admissions Test (UMAT)
  • Personal Qualities Assessment (PQA)
  • And Multiple Skills Assessment (MSA) as determined by the Joint Medical Program. Assumed knowledge is any two units of English.

Study pathways

No advanced standing will be granted toward the course, as per the terms of the Joint Medical Program. An exit pathway is available for eligible students.

There are numerous requirements which must be met prior to going on clinical placement, including meeting the NSW Health verification standards (including immunisations), securing a National Police Certificate (Criminal Record Check), WorkCover First Aid Certificate, and Working with Children Check.
