This program is aimed at students who have prior experience of theatre practice as a performer, director, designer, playwright or teacher, and is a distance education course. This is a creative practice as research course integrating theoretical and practical study. Students take part in a performance or other theatre event as playwright, director, actor or designer, and produce a short dissertation which builds on the knowledge and understanding gained during the practical work on the production. Students will be able to extend their knowledge and skills in the areas of theatre production, dramaturgical research, and academic writing. There is also room within the course of study for students to further develop their academic skills in writing, contemporary theoretical approaches, research methodology and/or the study of theatre history.

Entry Requirements:

Bachelor qualification with a major or equivalent in Theatre Studies and 2 years' experience as a performer, director, designer, playwright or teacher; or a Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma, Bachelor with Honours or Masters qualification in a relevant discipline. Relevant disciplines include, but are not limited to: English, Media and Communications, Performance, Theatre Studies, Writing. All applicants must submit a preliminary research proposal, in consultation with the Course Coordinator.


48 credit points (equivalent to 8 standard units) including core units and a choice of listed units, and participation in a practical theatre project.

Study Pathways:

Students may be eligible for credit (advanced standing) for previously completed studies, or considerable professional experience.

Further information:

Candidates are required to arrange to participate creatively in a practical theatre project with an appropriate organisation, such as a professional, amateur or community theatre company, or a school or university. It is the responsibility of the student to secure the facilities and resources required for this practical component.

College accommodation

UNE’s residential accommodation currently consists of eight colleges and a village of self-contained units. Accommodation ranges from the more traditional college with meals included and shared bathroom facilities, to the more independent, self-contained flats at Wright Village and UNE’s new Wright College , which provides modern studio apartments complete with your own kitchen and bathroom facilities.
