Computer systems engineers use digital and computing technologies to solve problems in industrial systems and in areas such as information processing, data transfer, communications, commerce and travel. They combine creativity with technology to develop both hardware and software for electronic and microprocessor-based systems. UON train engineers capable of solving the world's greatest challenges. As a computer systems engineer students may develop a precision agriculture system to optimise food production and minimise the use of chemicals in farming. They might develop breakthrough data transfer technology for remote access to medical services. Or, they could design a computer system that creates greater efficiency in wind turbine energy production. Computer systems engineers are experts in software development, electronic hardware design and networking. They design, build and test computer hardware and interface hardware to other equipment and networks. They also write the software for end user interaction. The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Computer Systems) program covers the theoretical and practical knowledge required to create a computing system from initiation to completion. It enables students to innovate a computer system as part of an existing engineering system such as a controller of industrial plant or equipment. The degree focuses on underlying principles and techniques so that graduates are able to learn and apply new technologies as they emerge in the future.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 or equivalent. Alternative entry pathways may include approved TAFE studies, preparatory programs such as Newstep, Open Foundation or Tertiary Preparation Certificate. Assumed knowledge: HSC Mathematics (Band 5 or above) or equivalent. One science-related subject would also be an advantage (Physics or Chemistry preferred). Applicants who have achieved less than Mathematics Band 5 may be admitted to the program but may need to complete additional study to successfully complete the requirements of the program. Students who have completed HSC Mathematics General 2 may be admitted to the program but can expect to undertake additional studies to successfully complete the requirements of the program.

Structure:

The Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering (Honours) is a 4 year program comprising 320 units, of which 280 units are core courses and 40 units are elective pathway courses. An elective pathway gives students the opportunity to broaden their skills and knowledge in their own or another engineering discipline; or specialise in areas such as business, maths or science; or undertake study overseas. Students will have the opportunity to undertake an industry related project in their final year and must also complete 12 weeks of industrial experience throughout the program. A graded Honours classification is awarded on the basis of superior performance attained throughout the program.
