Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering (Honours) / Bachelor of Science

University of Newcastle

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00109J

The Bachelor of Computer Systems Engineering (Honours) program covers the theoretical and practical knowledge required to create a computing system from inception to the delivery of a real product. It enables students to innovate smart computing systems for different industrial and entertainment sectors. The degree focuses on underlying principles and techniques so that graduates are able to learn and apply new technologies as they emerge in the future.Combined with an Engineering degree, a Science degree opens up a diverse range of employment opportunities in private industry and government organisations. Students could pursue a career in cutting edge areas like nanotechnology, telecommunications, fibre-optics, laser technology, medical physics, organic electronics, Internet of Things (IoT), Autonomous car and photovoltaics. Computer systems engineers also work in other areas such as smart instrumentation, Internet of Things (IoT), end user equipment design, road traffic systems, defence, etc. Some of these areas such as next generation broadband internet systems, quantum computing, 5G wireless networks etc., are closely connected with computer systems engineering. In particular, these are the areas that will constitute many of the future frontiers of technological development. This combined degree opens up these future frontiers of technological breakthroughs to students.

Standard entry requirements

Year 12 or equivalent. Alternative entry pathways may include approved TAFE studies, preparatory programs such as Newstep, Open Foundation or Tertiary Preparation Certificate. Assumed knowledge: HSC Mathematics (Band 5 or above) or equivalent. One science-related subject would also be an advantage (Physics or Chemistry preferred). Applicants who have achieved less than Mathematics Band 5 may be admitted to the program but may need to complete additional study to successfully complete the requirements of the program. Students who have completed HSC Mathematics General 2 may be admitted to the program but can expect to undertake additional studies to successfully complete the requirements of the program.

Recognition

This degree program is accredited by Engineers Australia and other affiliated international organisations.

Study pathways

Credit transfer agreements with TAFE NSW and other education providers are under continuous negotiation. A Bachelor of Science (Honours) is also available to meritorious students, as an additional year of full-time or equivalent part-time study.
