Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science - (Honours) Nuclear Medicine

This program will enable students to study nuclear medicine theory, nuclear medicine instrumentation and radiopharmacy, reinforced by anatomy, physiology, psychology, patient care and research. Nuclear medicine uses a mix of sophisticated medical imaging technology such as PET, scintigraphy, SPECT, hybrid PET/CT, people skills and radioactive chemical compounds (radiopharmaceuticals) to image and/or treat a wide variety of injuries or diseases ranging from elite athletes with sports injuries, to cardiac and brain studies, to cancer patients. Students complete supervised clinical practice in a variety of settings both locally and nationally as part of the program. Centres can include major teaching hospitals, small rural hospitals and private practices.

Structure:

320 units of compulsory courses over 4 years of full-time study, involving an integrated approach to the theoretical, practical and clinical components of the program. Students will complete approximately 42 weeks of practical experience through the program in a variety of settings both locally and nationally.

Study Pathways:

Students achieving a sufficiently high grade point average by the end of the third year of the program will be invited to undertake the graded honours stream in the fourth year of the program.

Further information:

This degree requires students to participate in clinical placements in NSW health facilities, and as such there is a requirement to meet NSW Ministry of Health placement verification requirements. These requirements may include criminal record checks, screening and immunisations. Students are expected to comply with these requirements prior to undertaking clinical placements. This degree and future professional practice is both mentally and physically demanding. The award of this degree is dependent upon the student satisfactorily completing and passing all academic and practical components.

Recognition:

Graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia, under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme administered by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
