This program is for those with the interest in, and ability for, a career as a professional musician or in a music-related field. Applicants will have had considerable musical training prior to application. The standard of performance level required is generally AMEB Grades 6-8. Explore your full potential and fast track your music career through hands-on study at the acoustically renowned Newcastle Conservatorium of Music. Music professionals write, arrange, orchestrate, conduct and perform musical compositions. If you've been performing or creating music, then studying a music degree at UON is an excellent way to continue your training and learn professional skills in music performance. Learn about music theory and practice from world-class, practicing musicians and choose your specialist focus from six diverse areas of study. Our Bachelor of Music graduates are professional musicians, composers, producers, teachers and professionals in related fields. Choose your specialist focus and enrol in courses from six diverse areas of study: Performance (Instrumental/Voice); Composition; Creative Production; Song Writing; Music Teaching and Pedagogy; Music Research and Communication The UON music degree fosters collaboration between performance, composition and creative production students. You will benefit from studying courses in: individual and/or group tuition in your principal instrument; hands-on classes in essential core academic curricula; a variety of elective options; opportunities to showcase your work in a variety of venues and presentation styles.

Entry Requirements:

Completed Year 12 or equivalent (No minimum ATAR requirement); written application; an audition and interview .


Students complete 240 units (typically 80 units per year for 3 years or equivalent), comprising of 140 units of Core Music Courses; 80 units of Directed Courses and 20 units of Electives. Students receive tuition in their principal instrument or form, attend classes in essential core academic curricula, and have the opportunity to extend their study in music or a number of other directed courses and/or electives. Students have opportunities to showcase their work in a variety of venues and presentation styles. Final examinations can include a public recital or presentation.

Study Pathways:

Credit may be available for previous study. Students wishing to become high school music teachers can apply for entry to the Master of Teaching following the Bachelor of Music degree. Honours is available as an additional year to meritorious students.

With some additional study, graduates can also undertake careers as arts administrators, public relations officers, librarians in music resources, business managers for orchestras or marketing and public relations staff in the theatre.
