Bachelor of Midwifery

As a midwife, you will work in partnership with women and their families through pregnancy, labour and birth and the early parenting period. You will work alongside women and families to achieve the best health outcomes for mothers and their babies. Our Midwifery programs have been co-designed with industry partners, consumers, past and present midwifery students to ensure midwifery at the University of Newcastle reflects contemporary midwifery knowledge and practice. Our programs have a strong research inspired theoretical basis to prepare students for midwifery professional experience placement. Midwifery recognises that people have diverse gender identities, and the terms pregnant person and parent can be used to avoid gendering birth, however women around the world are marginalised and oppressed so the University of Newcastle Midwifery programs have a focus on woman-centred care in alignment with the National Standards for the Midwife and the International Confederation of Midwives definition of a midwife.

Structure

The Bachelor of Midwifery program offered by the University of Newcastle requires the completion of 240 units of approved courses with a minimum requirement of: 200 units of core midwifery courses; 20 units of core human bioscience courses; 10 units of core pharmacology courses; and 10 units of core foundational Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander courses.

Entry requirements

Previous Year 12 studies and/or Higher education, tertiary, post-secondary qualifications and/or Overseas qualifications considered equivalent to Australian qualifications.

Recognition

Accreditation for this program for students commencing in 2027 has been submitted to the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) and is currently under assessment as part of the five-year accreditation cycle. However, this program of study is not yet accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC) or approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and will not lead to registration as a nurse/midwife in Australia under the approved qualification pathway, National Law Section 53a. Subject to accreditation and approval, the program will be available for commencement from 2027 and following successful completion, graduates will be eligible to apply for registration with the NMBA under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme administered by ANMAC.

Study Pathways

Credit transfer will be considered on a case by case basis except where there is an agreed pathway. Bachelor of Midwifery (Honours) is available to students who achieve the required grade-point average in the Bachelor of Midwifery.
