Master of Philosophy (By Research)

University of Newcastle

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Postgraduate
CRICOS: 00109J

Students of this program undertake a two year self-directed research project under the supervision of expert academics in their chosen discipline. The research results in the production of a thesis which is examined and approved externally to the University. The University of Newcastle offers the Master of Philosophy in a vast range of disciplines. The only real constraint on the range of topics that may be studied is the availability of supervision at the University. The MPhil is often seen as a lower level research higher degree than a PhD, however many students upgrade to PhD during the course of their research program.

Designed for

Students wishing to research and specialise in a specific discipline

Structure

This is a 2 year self-directed research project. Students are expected to give a presentation to an academic board sometime in the first year of their enrolment to demonstrate their progress and be confirmed in the program. Students are expected to work closely with their supervisors in the review of existing knowledge in the field and in the preparation of their contribution to new knowledge, their thesis. There is scope for students to undertake a limited amount of advanced coursework to complement their research.
