The Bachelor of Education (Primary) qualifies graduates to work as generalist primary teachers in schools, teaching children from reception to year seven. The curriculum is practical in nature and students begin work placements during the first six months. As well as real-world experience students are given the opportunity to fine-tune their learning with a primary specialisation.

Entry Requirements:

Qualify for South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) with competitive ATAR; or complete secondary education equivalent to SACE; complete International Baccalaureate Diploma; complete or partially complete higher education program; complete four Open Universities Australia courses at undergraduate level or above; complete a Diploma level or above; qualify for special entry; complete a Foundation Studies program; and meet any pre-requisite and academic requirements. International students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained the required standards prior to admission. All applicants will be required to submit a 400-word Education Statement with their application about their motivation to teach, addressing the topic, 'Why I want to be a teacher and my understanding of the role'.

Structure:

144 units comprising core courses and courses that are specific to the primary specialisation; students, as pre-service teachers undertake 18 units of minor to develop a specific area of study or a selection of optional courses as electives.

All students studying this degree will also be required to complete criminal history screening through the Department of Communities and Social Inclusion prior to being accepted for work placements. All Education students who are completing any in-school or site observations, activities or professional experience placements must also undertake mandatory training in responding to abuse and neglect prior to beginning placements. All students will also be required to meet the required standard in the national Literacy and Numeracy Test. This test will be completed during the first year of study.

Recognition:

Successful completion of this program provides a recognised academic qualification which will enable graduates to apply for teacher registration in South Australia, interstate and some overseas countries. Applicants should note there are other criteria determining eligibility for registration by the Teachers Registration Board of South Australia and other registration and regulatory authorities. Applicants are advised to check registration requirements as they are subject to change.
