The Bachelor of Outdoor and Environmental Leadership combines foundational environmental science and outdoor leadership concepts to equip future Outdoor Education professionals with a unique set of skills and knowledge.The industry-relevant degree provides the foundational skills and knowledge for a rewarding career in nature-based tourism, environmental interpretation, education, adventure therapy or adventure-based leadership. Students develop the reflective, evaluative and critical-thinking skills required to implement and lead culturally-aware and environmentally-sustainable outdoor experiences. Students complete over 400 hours of practical experience working directly with industry, including outdoor fieldwork, peer leadership and experiential learning. Students can align studies with their interests, with the opportunity to choose a minor or sub-major pathway, or undertake electives in areas such as Conservation Biology, Engineering and Environmental Geology or Ecotourism, Sustainable Environments and Community.

Structure

  • 108 units
  • 18 core courses and six electives. The first year consists of foundational environmental science and outdoor leadership courses. The second year consists of both foundational and more advanced environmental science courses as well as more advanced outdoor leadership courses and two electives. The final year consists of advanced environmental science, advanced outdoor leadership as well as four electives, of which a minimum of two will be advanced.

Standard entry requirements

  • Qualify for South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE) with competitive ATAR
  • OR complete secondary education equivalent to SACE
  • Complete International Baccalaureate Diploma
  • Complete or partially complete higher education program
  • Complete four Open Universities Australia courses at undergraduate level or above
  • Complete at Diploma level or above
  • Qualify for special entry
  • Complete a Foundation Studies program AND meet any pre-requisite and academic requirements
  • International students who speak English as a foreign language must have obtained the required standards prior to admission.
