English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)

This program is designed for students who wish to improve their English language skills. It is suitable for students who intend to continue on to university studies, travel in English speaking countries, or simply take a break from their studies at home. It aims to provide international students and non-English speaking background Australian citizens and residents, with functional English enabling students to live in an English speaking society and take advantage of the services offered; conversational English language skills to enable students to communicate with native and non-native speakers of English in the community; a foundation in more academic English language skills (at the EAP Level) to assist students wishing to pursue tertiary studies in Australia; socio-linguistic knowledge to enable students to use the language appropriately; knowledge of the culture and customs of Australia through classroom work and activities in the community; and assistance or information to help students solve problems they may encounter in the foreign environment.

Entry Requirements:

To be eligible for admission, applicants must satisfy the following requirements: Resident status - students on international student visas OR students from non-English speaking backgrounds resident in Australia; Minimum academic requirements - completion of senior secondary schooling in the home country OR Year 12 in an Australian High School OR mature-age entry. English Language entry requirements - placement in the program is determined by results of an English language placement test. Students will be placed in an appropriate level Elementary to Intermediate according to results on the placement test. Structure:

ELICOS is offered at 3 levels. Each level consists of 10 weeks of teaching. In general, students would study 10 weeks at one level before attempting to progress to the next level. Minimum of 5 weeks to a maximum of 52 weeks

Study Pathways:

ELICOS aims to prepare students for further study. When they complete level five of ELICOS, they could choose to go on to study USQ's English for Academic Purposes to prepare them for university study.

Recognition:

The Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) is a single national, comprehensive system of qualifications offered by higher education institutions (including universities), vocational education and training institutions and secondary schools. Each AQF qualification has a set of descriptors which define the type and complexity of knowledge, skills and application of knowledge and skills that a graduate who has been awarded that qualification has attained, and the typical volume of learning associated with that qualification type.
