Physiotherapists provide services to individuals and populations to develop, maintain and restore maximum movement and functional ability throughout the lifespan. Physiotherapists can help when movement and function are threatened by ageing, injury, diseases, disorders, conditions or environmental factors. Physiotherapy is concerned with identifying and maximising quality of life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention and rehabilitation. This encompasses physical, psychological, emotional and social wellbeing.

Entry Requirements:

Year 12 HSC or equivalent. Assumed knowledge: Physics and Chemistry. Recommended studies: Mathematics.

Structure:

The Physiotherapy practicum program begins in the first semester of second year with a 7 day (one day per week over 7 weeks) mentored clinical placement. In semester 2 of third year students participate in three 5 week clinical placements, and in fourth year students participate in 2 five-week clinical placements in semester 1.

Further information:

Practical experience: A 1-week clinical placement in first year, a 2-week placement in second year and four 5-week clinical placements over the third and fourth years. Placements will be at public hospitals, private practices and community health settings in both metropolitan and rural areas. Placements may occur in holiday periods. Students will be responsible for additional costs, including accommodation and travel. Career opportunities: Examples include clinical physiotherapy in public, private and community healthcare sectors and non-clinical roles in management, administration, research, advisory, regulatory or policy development.

Recognition:

Professional recognition: Accredited by the Australian Physiotherapy Council on behalf of the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, and eligible for registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia.
