This is a signature program designed to set UWA apart from other Universities by offering a thorough grounding in state-of-the-art biotechnology combined with training in enterprise and commercialisation. Biotechnology is rapidly becoming central to human lives. The use of plants, animals and bacteria, enhanced by areas such as genetics and genomics gives rise to new food, fibre and chemical production routes, new strategies for environmental protection and stewardship as well as training the next generation of biomolecular scientists. This includes developing the theory of genetics and molecular biology in parallel with skills training in practical techniques such as: genomics; proteomics; metabolomics; recombinant DNA methods; and basic and advanced bioinformatics. Current streams include application of biotechnology to Plant and Animal Breeding, Environmental Biotechnology, Genetics and Genomics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Commercialisation. Market advantage stems from the incorporation of commercialisation and enterprise, business planning and company spin out into the course. This cross-Faculty course draws on staff expertise in the UWA Business School, business and biotechnology spin out mentors to provide the academic and business skills graduates need to make a significant contribution to the biotechnology sector now and in future. There are also opportunities for students to pursue options from other faculties. Graduates will be well positioned to pursue careers in international research laboratories, government agencies as well as the private sector. The core of the course draws on the expertise in Science and Business to provide a basis for skills training in biotechnology and combining this with skills in enterprise and commercialisation.
The Master of Biotechnology is offered by coursework or coursework and dissertation. While the standard timeframe for completion of this degree is two years (full time), if students have previously completed an undergraduate degree in a cognate (related) area it may be possible to complete within 1.5 years. The course offers a focussed, advanced learning experience that will enhance career choices. Students must complete all core units and specialisation core units. This degree also provides the flexibility to choose from a range of units to complement specific interests.
