The Master of Japanese Studies is a specialist degree designed for graduates who wish to pursue research in aspects of Japanese studies. Suitable topics for research include contemporary social, cultural, and political issues. Students are expected to be proficient in the Japanese language and are expected to use non-English language sources, including academic literature, the press and televisual media, in their research.

- supervised investigation and research that results in the preparation of a thesis of not more than 50,000 words. The thesis is examined by two eminent scholars external to the University.
