Abbie Basson Sarcoma Research Scholarship

University of Western Australia, The (UWA)

The Abbie Basson Sarcoma Research Scholarship is offered annually in memory of Abbie Basson. Before her life was tragically cut short by Ewing's Sarcoma at the young age of 20, Abbie planned to fund research into the uncommon and aggressive tumour group, sarcoma. The PhD top up scholarship is to be awarded to an outstanding candidate who has attracted a Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend, Australian Postgraduate Award or equivalent to encourage and support research into the cellular and molecular biology of sarcoma (malignant bone and soft tissue tumour) with a view to developing more effective treatments. The scholarship provides a top-up living allowance of $10,000 per annum and a research operating allowance of $10,000 per annum for laboratory expenses and consumables. The scholarship is a supplementary scholarship to be held in conjunction with a Research Training Program (RTP) Stipend, a University Postgraduate Award (UPA) or equivalent postgraduate research scholarship recognised by the University.

The scholarship is open to applicants who are intending to undertake PhD research into one of the following areas of sarcoma: cellular and molecular biology of sarcoma; transnational clinical research, including but not exclusive to the areas of oncology, surgery, pathology, radiotherapy, physiotherapy, exercise science and palliative care; the psychology of patients and/or carers in respect to the rare nature of this cancer and how this may impact on their treatment and well being; community and health professional education and communication strategies around rare cancers (specifically sarcoma), particularly in the adolescent and young adult demographic.
