Environmental science is a practical and multi-disciplinary science that spans the biophysical, geochemical and social sciences and focuses on the interaction between the living and non-living elements of the world, including the role of human impacts. Environmental scientists assess, research and manage a wide range of environmental issues and provide solutions to emerging environmental problems that face current and future societies. These include climate change, biodiversity, water quality, resource management, waste and pollution and environmental protection and conservation.The Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) integrates material from a wide variety of disciplines relevant to the environment and its management. These include science, engineering, management, law, technology and social science. You will be equipped with the knowledge of ethical, social, economic and political aspects of environmental issues. These skills will help you work with other professionals in the environmental field, such as engineers and policymakers.You have the opportunity to specialise in one of the following majors: Climate and Sustainability*, Land Resources, Wildlife and Conservation*.The superb local marine life, coastal landscapes, nearby rainforest escarpment, and fresh-water and terrestrial ecosystems means that Wollongong is ideally located for environmental science studies. Students are exposed first-hand to a wide range of urban, rural and ecological issues during practical fieldwork components of the degree. You will graduate with real-world experience and will be ready for a career in government, educational and research organisations, private industry, and consultancies.

Structure

The Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) requires successful completion of at least 192 credit points, as set out below.PLEASE NOTE:1. Students may only count 60 credit points of 100-level subjects towards the degree.2. Students must have a grade of Pass (not Pass Supplementary) or higher in 300-level core subjects.Satisfactory performance must be achieved [normally a Weighted Average Mark (WAM) of 70% or greater in EESC320 plus 3 strand/discipline related 300-level subjects] for entry into the fourth year of the Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) course. Students with a WAM below 70% in the relevant 300-level subjects may only progress into the fourth year of the Bachelor of Environmental Science (Honours) with the approval of the Environmental Science Coordinator.Environmental Chemistry major: Students who have completed CHEM104 and CHEM105 and are proceeding to CHEM211, CHEM212 and CHEM213, must (a) have obtained marks of at least 80% in both CHEM104 and CHEM105, (b) complete additional directed study by two weeks before the start of the session in which the CHEM21X subjects are taken and (c) obtain permission of Head of Students. Standard entry requirements

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

Recognition

Graduates are eligible for full membership with the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand and other relevant professional bodies depending on their disciplinary orientation.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded. An Honours (Dean's Scholar) program is also available.
