The UOW Bachelor of Mathematics Education qualifies students to be a high school math teacher and focuses on developing mathematical knowledge and professional teaching skills. During this four-year degree, students will study a combination of maths and education subjects allowing them to practically apply both disciplines throughout the degree. Mathematics subjects including calculus, algebra, statistics and mathematical modelling are complemented with education subjects about teaching and learning strategies including learning and development, pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching), professional teaching skills, curriculum studies and meeting learners' needs.

Structure

Course structureThe Bachelor of Mathematics Education requires the successful completion of at least 192 credit points as specified below, including all Professional Experience components embedded in the course and the teaching performance assessment (UOW TPA) in EDPS402.Students must successfully complete 42 credit points and PSYS150 to be eligible for the first Professional Experience. Students should also note that a number of subject pre-requisites will be in place throughout the course.Students must have successfully completed all core subjects and the Literacy and Numeracy Test (LANTITE), and be enrolled in any annual and final semester core subjects to be eligible for their final Professional Experience.Students who wish to complete the equivalent of a Mathematics major are required to undertake MATH222, plus a minimum of 24 credit points in Mathematics at 300 level or higher. This may require you to take more than the minimum credit point requirement for this degree.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

Recognition

This degree is accredited and recognised as a national professional teaching qualification. Students seeking work outside NSW or Australia are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements. All students completing a NSW teacher education course will need to pass an approved literacy and numeracy test.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.

Each year, UOW offers up to five Mathematics Secondary Education Scholarships to students starting this degree with an ATAR above 80 and Band 5 in Advanced Mathematics or equivalent.
