The Bachelor of Medical Biotechnology (Honours) provides students with the tools and knowledge to work in both medicine and bioremediation. It encompasses the rapidly evolving fields of proteomics, genetic engineering, and advanced techniques in molecular analysis. A new generation of pharmaceuticals, vaccines, hormones, and anti-inflammatory agents are being developed using these technologies. This degree will prepare students to work in biomedical science research and the biotechnology industry, which is at the forefront of these developments.

Structure

The Bachelor of Medical Biotechnology (Honours) requires successful completion of at least 192 credit points as specified belowPlease note:Students who have not completed HSC Mathematics at Band 4 or higher (or equivalent) are encouraged to complete a mathematics subject (MATH151 or equivalent) normally in the first year.Students who have achieved a mark of 65% or more in NSW HSC Chemistry or equivalent must select Chemistry Option 1. All other students must select Chemistry Option 2Students may only count 60 credit points of 100-level subjects towards the degree.Students must have a grade of Pass (not Pass Supplementary) or higher in 300-level core subjects.Students must complete either STS 112 or SOC 251

Standard entry requirements

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

Recognition

Graduates qualify to apply for membership of relevant professional societies such as the Australian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Australian Society for Microbiology.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for a specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded. A Bachelor of Medical Biotechnology Honours (Dean's Scholar) program is also available.
