Nutritionists are scientists who attain, maintain and promote the health of the public through nutrition research, communication of nutrition information or public health forums. Dietitians are specialist nutritionists who, in addition to these research and public health roles, are accredited to work with individuals and groups to help improve their health outcomes and quality of life. This occurs in settings such as the community, hospitals, private practice, research, and food service.The course is designed to meet the core fields of competency, including the key areas of professional practice, improving nutrition outcomes for individuals, groups and communities, critical thinking and evidence-based practice and collaboration with stakeholders. These skills can then be applied to all areas of practice including clinical dietetics in hospitals and private practice, community and public health nutrition, food service systems management, and research.

Structure

To be awarded the Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics (Hons) students are to complete 192 credit points as listed below.The primary aim of the Bachelor of Nutrition & Dietetics is to prepare graduates to be professional dietitian-nutritionists, eligible for membership of Dietitians Australia and the credential of Accredited Practising Dietitian. The course is designed to meet the core fields of competency as defined by the profession, across a range of practice areas including clinical dietetics, community and public health nutrition and food service systems management.This program comprises coursework, a research project and professional placements, which develop the knowledge and skills required when working in community settings, public health, hospitals and other care facilities.This degree includes over 800 hours of clinical experience undertaken in four domains of dietetic practice including hospitals, community health centres, government and non-government organisations, and food service organisations.Graduates are eligible for membership of the Dietitians Australia and can apply for professional recognition as an Accredited Practising Dietitian.Your study program requires you to attend workplace experience or clinical placements within a range of health-related settings. Before you can commence a placement within a NSW Health facility, you must meet NSW Health’s mandatory requirements for police check, code of conduct and immunisation / vaccination.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia.

Recognition

Full accreditation with the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA), making all graduates eligible for the credential of Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD). The course meets the requirements of the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA) for graduates to register as nutrition scientists, following 3 years of relevant work experience after graduation.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for a specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded. High achieving students may be offered entry into the Bachelor of Nutrition and Dietetics (Honours) (Dean's Scholar).
