Science Education at UOW involves learning science and how to teach it effectively. As a science teacher you will teach the structure and behaviour of both the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. UOW educated science teachers have practical teaching skills and a high-level knowledge of science.Science Education at UOW qualifies you to be a high school science teacher. You will complete extensive professional experience throughout your degree, which allows you to learn by observation and apply your skills in the classroom. You may also have opportunities for rural and international professional experiences, and to study overseas with UOW's international exchange and study abroad partners, and to join international cultural immersion programs.

Structure

Course structureThe Bachelor of Science Education requires the successful completion of at least 192 credit points as specified below, including all Professional Experience components embedded in the course and the teaching performance assessment (UOW TPA) in EDPS402.Students are required to select a teaching area in one of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science or Physics, and complete the subjects specified.Students must successfully complete 42 credit points and PSYS150 to be eligible for the first Professional Experience. Students should also note that a number of subject pre-requisites will be in place throughout the course.Students must have passed all core subjects in and the Literacy and Numeracy Test (LANTITE), and be enrolled in any annual and final semester core subjects to be eligible for their final Professional Experience.Students must not complete more than 60 credit points of 100 level subjects.

Standard entry requirements

Applicants need to have achieved the required score in a qualification equivalent to the completion of 13 years of schooling in Australia. A teaching questionnaire will also need to be completed as part of the application.In order to succeed in your chosen course, it is assumed you have completed relevant subjects in your senior high school studies or other relevant qualifications. This is particularly important for degrees which have a strong basis in Mathematics or Science.

Recognition

This degree is accredited and recognised as a national professional teaching qualification. Students seeking work outside NSW or Australia are advised to check with potential employers and other teacher registration authorities for any additional requirements. All students completing a NSW teacher education course will need to pass an approved literacy and numeracy test.

Study pathways

If applicants can demonstrate they have met the learning outcomes for UOW subjects through prior learning, such as previous tertiary or TAFE qualifications, they may be eligible for credit towards their degree. Where relevant to the UOW degree, specified credit may be given for specific subject(s); where not relevant to the degree, unspecified credit may be awarded.

Further information

Students with a limited background in mathematics, physics, chemistry or biology are advised to enrol in bridging courses held in February each year. UOW offers up to five Science Secondary Education Scholarships to students starting this degree with an ATAR above 80 and Band 5 in at least one science subject. A Dean's Scholar program is also available. If you are a high-achieving and motivated student, the Dean's Scholar program will give you an enriched educational experience. Dean's scholars are supported by a member of academic staff to advise you on matters concerned with your degree
