The Graduate Certificate of Work Health and Safety provides a professional introductory program of study in the area of occupational health and safety. It is also a pathway for the higher level Graduate Diploma in Work Health and Safety. This degree UOW's Work Health and Safety programs have been developed in conjunction with industry to address the complex nature of occupational health and safety in the workplace. The specialised knowledge and skills developed throughout the course will allow you to confidently address the complex nature of workplace occupational health and safety issues. The program has a flexible mode of delivery, with online content delivered up front, complemented by block teaching sessions of 3-5 days for exploration and application of subject material. UOW is home to Work Health and Safety scholars who are leaders in their field. The strong pedagogical basis of the course is informed by a team of experienced teaching staff from a range of professional backgrounds, including allied health, engineering, occupational hygiene and risk management. The multidisciplinary approach to learning and teaching at UOW enables valuable interdisciplinary experience with Public Health and Social Sciences students, and academic input from engineering, medicine, various allied health professionals, law and business.

Structure

The Graduate Certificate in Work Health and Safety requires the successful completion of 24 credit points from the following subjects: People and Work, WHS Risk Management, Work Injury Management, and Workplace Hazards and Hygiene.

Standard entry requirements

  • Bachelor's degree of at least 3 years' duration from a recognised tertiary institution or equivalent
  • Or a Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety plus relevant work experience

Recognition

The Graduate Certificate is not eligible for professional accreditation because of the limited scope of study. If, however, a student applies for admission to the Graduate Diploma on successful completion of the Graduate Certificate, all subjects can be used as academic credit. Please refer to the Graduate Diploma of Work Health and Safety and Masters of Work Health and Safety for professional recognition and accreditation at that level. Please note that successful completion of HAS 870 can be used to apply for an exemption to the compulsory WorkCover NSW 2-day Return to Work Coordinator training.

Study pathways

All subjects successfully completed in the Graduate Certificate will count as credit towards the Graduate Diploma of Work Health and Safety upon successful transfer to the Graduate Diploma.
