This program is designed for social workers who are currently working in the field. If students are interested in continuing their education in social work, this postgraduate program has been shaped to build upon their existing experience, and consolidate and extend their knowledge and skills in counselling practice. Students will have the opportunity to engage in in-depth analysis of their own social work practice and be encouraged to add value to interactive theory seminars. Adopting a systemic and relational approach to counselling, students will study systemic family therapy, narrative and solution focused therapies. The postgraduate courses in counselling and social work also explores key aspects of other approaches such as: psychodynamic; psychotherapy; cognitive behaviour therapy; trauma based approaches; couple therapy. Students will be given an opportunity to develop their clinical skills and develop an appreciation of the research process.

Standard entry requirements

An undergraduate degree and eligibility for membership of the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW), meeting professional association requirements including professional development and supervision. Two years of specialised counselling practice experience ensuring that students in the program are already skilled clinicians. Current employment in an organisational context where prospective students are able to provide counselling, case management or other direct practice interventions with clients. This is in contrast to social workers who may have worked primarily in administrative or management roles. Admission is subject to quota. Applications must include a brief curriculum vitae and the names and contact details of at least two professional referees.

Further information

The Master of Counselling Social Work is a 2-year part-time only program. Please note that the intake for this program occurs every 2nd year. The next intake of commencing students will be for Semester 1, 2019. The ability to see clients in a counselling role is a strict requirement for all courses.
