Bachelor of Education - P-12

Victoria University (VU)

The Bachelor of Education (P-12) is a four-year, full-time teacher education course that examines the continuum of education and provides students with sufficient background, skills, and knowledge to teach from Preparatory year (Foundation) through to Year 12. It also provides a community and school-based approach to teacher education, with significant opportunities for students to pursue a range of teaching methods. Throughout the course, students will work in primary and secondary settings to complete at least 80 days of supervised teaching practice. This partnership between schools and the university provides the context through which students will engage in a praxis inquiry model that links practice and theory. In Year 4 of the course, students will participate in an extended placement in either a primary or secondary school. The Bachelor of Education (P-12) offers 16 major areas of discipline studies including Art, Biology, Digital Media, Disability Studies in Education, English Literary Studies, Environmental Studies, Food Technology, Health, Humanities, Mathematics, Media Studies, Music, Outdoor Education, Physical Education (Secondary), Psychology and Student Welfare. Victoria University is the only university in Australia to use the block teaching model, which has been in operation throughout Sweden and parts of North America for more than four decades.

First-year and second-year students at Victoria University complete one subject every four weeks, are assessed, and then proceed to the next four-week unit. Immersion in each subject allows students to master it, rather than juggling four units at once. From 2020, all students will be taught in this way.

Victoria University is one of only six Australian universities to combine higher education and vocational and further education with its Victoria University Polytechnic, which is based on multiple university campuses. The Polytechnic creates pathways direct to the workforce or to university degrees.

VU College offers English language courses, pathway diplomas and courses for international students at its Melbourne and Sydney campuses as well as offshore with international education partners.
