Safe Use of Machinery for Technology Teaching

This course has been designed to provide technology teachers using wood and metal machinery in a technology classroom environment with skills in: applying principles and legal requirements of OHS to technology teaching; safely operating machinery commonly used by students and teachers; identifying, assessing and controlling hazards when working with machines used by students and teachers; managing safe use of machines in a classroom setting; providing first level maintenance for machines such as lubrication and changing of blades; transferring safe operating principles to a range of machines; and using protective items such as guards and clothing.

Entry Requirements:

It is expected that course participants are teachers who are registered with or have permission to teach from the Victorian Institute of Teaching, or individuals enrolled in an approved course in teaching. Participants must be able to operate wood and metal machinery used in technology teaching.

Victoria University is the only university in Australia to use the block teaching model, which has been in operation throughout Sweden and parts of North America for more than four decades.

First-year and second-year students at Victoria University complete one subject every four weeks, are assessed, and then proceed to the next four-week unit. Immersion in each subject allows students to master it, rather than juggling four units at once. From 2020, all students will be taught in this way.

Victoria University is one of only six Australian universities to combine higher education and vocational and further education with its Victoria University Polytechnic, which is based on multiple university campuses. The Polytechnic creates pathways direct to the workforce or to university degrees.

VU College offers English language courses, pathway diplomas and courses for international students at its Melbourne and Sydney campuses as well as offshore with international education partners.
