A greater degree of difference

Brought to you by TAFE NSW

When George Loizos was looking to earn a degree, it was TAFE NSW’s more modern methods of learning as well as smaller class sizes that helped him decide where he should study.

“The hands-on and practical approach to learning that TAFE NSW offered was a standout feature compared to a more traditional way of gaining a degree at university,” he says.

Course content, delivered differently

By enrolling in the Bachelor of Design (Interior Design) — course code HE20501 — and delivered through the award-winning TAFE NSW Design Centre Enmore in Sydney, George studied how to create innovative, original concepts for commercial interior design projects, explored the spatial, structural and material elements of built interior environments, and developed a comprehensive understanding of the interaction between people and spaces.

However, it wasn’t just the course content that he enjoyed.

“Apart from the hands-on, practical based learning that I experienced at TAFE NSW, one of best things was the teachers and people around me,” he says. “Considering that we were a smaller cohort than what you would experience at a university, I was able to sit down with my teachers and get quality feedback as well as ask my peers, for their advice and opinions. We all helped and learned from each other.”

More than a class: A community

Like George, many TAFE NSW students find a stronger sense of comradery and collaboration compared to university experiences.

“One thing that makes TAFE NSW stand out is the community — from the teachers to the students — everyone was there to help and to learn from each other,” he says. “I grew up a lot while at TAFE NSW and I can attribute that to the people I was surrounded by.

“Having a smaller cohort in my class compared to university meant having more one-on-one time with my teachers. Because of this, my teachers were more like my mentors who taught me skills that I could use in my future as a professional interior designer, whenever I had an issue, they were always there to help.”

Don’t just earn a piece of paper – start a career

Studying a bachelor’s degree, postgraduate, or higher education qualification with TAFE NSW, and graduating with a strong theoretical knowledge, essential practical experience, and valuable industry connections, can all help to give you a head start for your career.

Furthermore, if like George, you’re looking to study a creative course, TAFE NSW has a range of state-of-the-art facilities that include purpose-built exhibition spaces, studios, and professional workshops. Here, you can learn from fantastic teachers with actual industry experience, as they teach you all the specialist and fundamental business and creative skills you’ll need to launch and sustain an inspired career.

“I would highly recommend a degree with TAFE NSW to people who want a more hands on and practical approach to learning,” says George, who had nothing but praise for TAFE NSW, and everything he learned throughout his degree course.

“The thing that surprised me about my course was how much I really took out of it. Although I learned a lot within the practice of interior design, I also learned many skills that could take me into a lot of different avenues of design.

“By choosing to study at TAFE NSW, I was able to advance and strengthen my day-to-day skills, as well as the professional skills that will help me in my career as an interior designer and in the real world.”
