Serina — Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Infrastructure)

Why did you choose to study engineering and technology?

As a kid I was always creative, organised and enjoyed mathematics and physics. I also enjoyed design and observing work sites and buildings, and wondered how it all came about. Considering my skills and interests, I decided that engineering would be the perfect profession for me to work in.

What was the best thing about your course?

When I completed Year 12, my score wasn’t high enough to gain entry into the bachelor degree, but there was another pathway I was able to take to get into the course I wanted. I completed an advanced diploma of engineering design, which was very informative and practical. It helped me to gain extra knowledge and skills, especially in computer-aided design. I felt that the advanced diploma gave me a broad insight into the engineering field and allowed me to explore the area in which I wanted to major. The degree allowed me to be much more selective with my subjects, which I enjoyed. Both courses were very well structured and exposed us to the general civil engineering field. Eventually, we were also given the choice to concentrate on the structural, water, traffic, project management, geotechnical and estimating areas of engineering.

What was the worst thing about your course?

The worst thing, I’d say, were the lectures. I didn’t feel engaged enough and found it hard to concentrate with such a large number of students, and also a lack of enthusiasm from some lecturers.

Have you found work in your field?

I found work experience in traffic engineering and was able to gain employment as a casual but I am still seeking full-time work. At the moment, I’m looking around and applying for graduate programs or any other opportunities that may arise (mainly in the structural engineering field).

What advice would you give to students considering studying engineering and technology?

I would say that if you are serious and want to excel in the course, the most important thing I've learnt is to avoid leaving studying and assignments to the last minute. It will be much easier for you to keep on top of your studies and result in less pressure when deadlines and exams are approaching.
