Taking care of yourself over the uni break
University holidays are in full swing and for most students,
the first semester of 2018 won't commence until the start of March. This is a
significant amount of time away from the classroom and though many students
will spend this period working, it's important to use the break wisely from a
personal perspective.
The mental health of people has never been more closely scrutinised, resulting in a population that is becoming increasingly aware of the importance of wellbeing. These four tips are just some ways you can ensure you're in a decent state of mind over the holidays.
Plan the year ahead
Get a head start on the year ahead by identifying some key goals. These could be associated with study or something more personal - perhaps developing a budget and sticking to that, or training for an athletic pursuit. This is something that become very difficult to do once semester one in underway, so it's best to put it all down on paper prior to the New Year.Â
Exercise regularly
Whether you're a gym junkie or a couch potato by nature, the December-February period is arguably the toughest period of the year to motivate yourself to exercise. The mercury is often well over 30 degrees, so running can be a bit of a chore. However, there are plenty of other ways to keep fit without melting - swimming is refreshing, most gyms are air conditioned and even walking the dog can turn into a workout.
Look after your mental health
The end of the year is such a busy time and in between an entanglement of work, study and social engagements, it's easy to become overwhelmed. Give yourself a mental break during the holidays - read a book you've always wanted to, spend a day with old friends and just generally take some time to relax.
Try something new
It might require you to get out of your comfort zone or it may not, but either way, giving something new a go should be a goal during the uni break. It could be literally anything, from experimenting with meditation or eating African food for the first time to visiting a place you've never been before.
