This is an intercalated course designed to enable Curtin Medical School (CMS) Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) students gain experience of research and to achieve an AQF level 8 qualification. This will enable students to be eligible to progress to a higher degree by research through the PhD pathway. This is a stepping stone for medical students to pursue a clinician scientist pathway, post-internship. Students will develop critical thinking skills and application to their field of research. Independent and supervisor guided learning relevant to the research project will enable students to develop subject specific knowledge and research skills. Students will work with a supervisor to develop their research protocol and complete their research activities and data collection, analyse their results and write up the research.

Standard entry requirements

This is an intercalated course, designed to be undertaken by Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (B-MBBS) students at the end of Year 3 and before Year 4 of the MBBS course. Students eligible for entry into the BMedSci (Hons) must be enrolled in Curtin Universitys Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and have successfully completed Years 1 -3 of the course. Applicants are expected to attain a CWA average of ≥ 65 in Year 2 and Year 3 of the MBBS course. Applicants are also required to have the agreement in principle of a member of academic staff to act as supervisor, and admission into honours is subject to an appropriate supervisor and project being available. Students will select an appropriate project from an advertised list. Applicants would require approval from the Head of School and the Course Coordinator of the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (B-MBBS) program to take a Leave of Absence from their medical studies and enrol in the Honours course.
