This program provides an introduction to theories and practices useful in working with families. It is ideal for those with an interest in enhancing their skills in the professional contact they have with families - including workers in education, nursing, welfare, family support, child protection, disability, drug and alcohol, residential care, and mental health. Students are encouraged to relate theory and practice to their own work settings. Content offers a basic grounding in family therapy theory as well as experiential work in small groups.


Delivered at the Bouverie Centre. Students must complete 4 subjects. Classes span 6 hours per week over two 13-week semesters.

Standard entry requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in any field but preferably in counselling, health or welfare
  • Completion of the Bouverie Centre's Introductory to Family Therapy Workshop is highly recommended
  • NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.


The Graduate Certificate in Family Therapy is accredited by the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT). Graduates of the Graduate Certificate in Family Therapy may apply for associate membership with the AAFT. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Further information

There are three streams available. One is primarily online, the second is delivered face-to-face at The Bouverie Centre, Brunswick, and the third stream is offered as a site-based delivery model. This site based stream can only be offered to organisations who wish to enroll and fund a minimum cohort of 10 students. It cannot be offered to individual private students.
