This program gives students the opportunity to further their understanding of the statistical modelling of physical, biological and economic phenomena, so students can contribute to applied research and development in industry, commerce and research. It places particular emphasis on data analysis using computer-related technology and to the fundamental theory of applied statistics methodology. Students can select studies from a wide range of components, and they will have the opportunity to complete a minor thesis in their second year. As part of this course, students may complete subjects offered through the Key Centre of Statistical Science (KCSS), which comprises of La Trobe University, Monash University and RMIT. Additionally, students can also complete appropriate subjects offered nationally through the Access Grid Room Network.
During the first year of the course students complete 8 core subjects. In second year, students are required to complete 5 subjects and write a minor thesis. Students can choose to do the Consulting Practical, depending on project and supervisor availability. Electives include: Regression Analysis, Applied Financial Econometrics, Financial Econometrics, Game Theory and Applications, Statistical Inference, Statistics for Quality and Productivity in Industry, Time Series Analysis, Advanced Data Analysis, Spatial Analysis, Financial Mathematics, and Analysis of Medical Data.

Standard entry requirements
- Australian Bachelor's degree, or an international equivalent, including a sufficiently good pass in third-year statistics or its equivalent
- Applicants with an Honours degree in statistics or equivalent may be accepted into the second year of the Master's course.
