The Master of Counselling at Monash provides a professional qualification and offers a combination of theory and professional experience, providing you with the knowledge and skills to begin a rewarding career as a counsellor. The course is suited to people from a variety of professions, such as human resources, health, social welfare and education. It is taught by leading academics with extensive experience working as counsellors and psychologists. You'll examine the various forms of professional counselling, including online and distance counselling, child and adolescent counselling, and individual, couples and group counselling. You'll be introduced to the ethical and professional issues faced by counsellors, and explore creative approaches to counselling, including play and art therapy. You'll also gain in-depth knowledge across a range of contemporary cognitive-behaviour therapies. You will complete 250 hours of professional placement, and apply theory to practice under supervision in clinical settings. This includes 140 'contact' hours (e. g. face-to-face, couple, family and group counselling) and 110 'non-contact' hours (e. g. observation, case notes, meetings, administration). You will complete 35 hours of supervision (which are included in the non-contact hours). The Counselling Placement Team source many placements and communicate these opportunities to students. Please note most placement providers will require you to submit an application and/or attend an interview to secure the placement. Students located interstate, overseas or rurally will be required to source your own placements, under the guidance of the Counselling Placement Team. Graduates work in a variety of fields, including careers counselling, education, child and family services, health policy, family counselling, health-services management and rehabilitation counselling.

Structure
There are 3 entry points - 2 years, 5 years or 1 year. Depending upon your prior qualifications and experience you will be eligible for entry credit, which reduces the duration.

- Entry level 1 : An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70%) average.
- Entry level 2: An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70%) average and a minimum of two years of full time equivalent relevant professional experience
- An Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent) in a related discipline including social work, psychology or counselling with at least a distinction (70%) average
- A four-year Australian bachelor honours degree or an Australian graduate certificate or an Australian graduate diploma (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70%) average
- An Australian master's degree (or equivalent) with at least a distinction (70%) average.

- Pearson Test of English (Academic): 65 Overall score, with minimum scores: Listening 65, Reading 65, Speaking 65 and Writing 65
- TOEFL Internet-based test: 98 Overall score, with minimum scores: Reading 24, Listening 24, Speaking 23 and Writing 27.
Recognition
This course is accredited in Australia by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) and Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA). Please note: membership of PACFA requires a first degree in a relevant discipline.
