The QUT Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree prepares students to think ahead and take advantage of employment opportunities in growth areas and newly emerging sectors, such as intellectual property and technology. The degree provides a strong foundation in contemporary law knowledge and transferable skills such as critical analysis, problem solving and research that will equip students for their careers. Students have the opportunity to choose electives that align with their interests and can gain practical and hands-on experience. Students benefit from meaningful connections with high profile industry employers and classes with leading and internationally renowned law experts. Law students have the option to complete the Law, Technology and Innovation minor as part of their elective options.
The LLB(Hons) requires the completion of 31 units. This is comprised of 19 core units, including units based upon the 'Priestley 11' required for admission to legal practice in Australia and 12 electives. Students are able to deepen their knowledge in areas of interest through their elective choices which reflect areas of legal practice and emerging developments in law.
Standard entry requirements
- Year 12 or equivalent
- Assumed knowledge: English, or Literature, or English and Literature, or English as an Additional Language (Units 3 & 4, C). Entry into the external mode of the course is restricted to applicants living outside the Brisbane City Council boundaries and within Australia.
Graduates satisfy the academic requirements for admission as a solicitor and/or barrister in all Australian states and territories. It is also recognised for admission purposes in West and East Malaysia, India, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.
On successful completion of the Bachelor of Laws (Honours), there are a number of further study options open to you. The Bachelor of Laws (Honours) meets the entry requirements for Practical Legal Training courses for example, the QUT Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice. In addition, successful completion of this course will allow you to pursue postgraduate opportunities through research and coursework based degrees in law.
