In this program, students undertake a range of units to equip them as professional social workers. They can undertake specialist units in family and relationships, community and disability, and services to young people. Other units cover areas such as mental health, legal and ethical aspects of practice, Indigenous perspectives, and dealing with complexity. Students may also choose a distinctive study pathway such as child protection, international social work practice or research.

Students undertake 2 placements of 500 hours each in third and fourth year respectively.

Recognition

This is an Australian Association of Social Workers accredited qualification. It is an entry qualification into the social work profession and has been determined to meet the Australian Social Work Education and Accreditation Standards.

Study pathways

Students may apply to transfer to a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) at the end of second year. Entry to Honours will be competitive and will be based on Grade Point Average. Students may be able to claim credit for part of their course, on the basis of completed or partially completed studies, and other assessable learning outcomes.

Further information

Current Blue Card and Hepatitis B vaccination prior to commencing the placement components in this course. Diphtheria, Measles, Mumps, Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Rubella, Tetanus and Varicella (Chicken Pox) vaccinations are mandatory for all students attending a Queensland Health facility for placement. Hepatitis A, Influenza and Poliomyelitis are highly recommended for all Health students. QUT offers a range of scholarships that provide real support for students. If you receive an ATAR or selection rank equal to or higher than the offer guarantee, you are guaranteed a place in the course regardless of the threshold. This means that when you know your ATAR or selection rank you can check your eligibility for a QUT course before receiving an offer. You still need to lodge a QTAC application by the closing date. A small number of courses do not participate in the offer guarantee scheme.
