This graduate certificate will give you the skills to understand, conserve, reconstruct and restore heritage materials. Grounded in a conceptual structure of values based management, the course allows you to explore how heritage materials are made, how they respond to their changing environments, how people value them, and how conservation professionals ensure that they survive into the future. Through practical workshops and behind the scenes tours of heritage sites and collections you will learn to investigate the condition and significance of heritage items, develop conservation and management plans for them, and carry out laboratory and on-site treatment techniques to preserve and restore them. Intrinsic to this course is the flexibility to develop your personal vision, interests and focus as a conservation professional, whether your passion is built or machinery heritage, small object and scientific collections, artworks, archives, personal memorabilia or other types of heritage. This minor can be combined with the Bachelor of Arts (Culture and Heritage) and the Master of Arts to build a comprehensive set of professional and cultural leadership skills that will prepare you for a rewarding career in the cultural sector. It is also suitable for students with a background in science, environmental management, architecture, engineering or building and construction.
