Master of Food Science and Technology
Food is more than sustenance. Food is the cornerstone of culture, global health, and innovation. As the world population continues to expand, we are faced with evolving challenges in food production, sustainability, and nutrition. The demand for forward-thinking professionals in the field of food science has never been greater. The Master of Food Science and Technology program at the University of Newcastle will provide you with the advanced knowledge, skills and opportunities to work in various areas in the food industry. Our flexible program structure is designed to empower you with the necessary skills, knowledge, and professional industry experience to thrive in this exciting area of work. You will be prepared to pursue diverse roles across the food industry sector or continue into food science research, including product development and quality assurance. Researchers in the discipline of Food Science have expertise, and actively work, in the areas of food and flavour chemistry, food processing and preservation, post-harvest technology, sensory analysis, consumer behaviour amongst others. Within the School, they actively collaborate with researchers in the discipline of Biological Sciences (plant science and biotechnology groups) and with the School of Health Sciences in the field of nutrition and dietetics.

Structure
The Master of Food Science and Technology program requires students to complete 160 units. This includes 80 units of core courses and one 80 unit specialisation (students choose either a Research or Industry based specialisation).
Entry requirements
- For entry with (1) a 3- or 4-year Bachelor's degree in Food Science and/or Technology (AQF Level 7)
- (2) a 4-year Bachelor's Honours degree (AQF Level 8) or a Master's degree in a *cognate program (AQF Level 9) with at least 5 years of experience in the food industry, the volume of learning is 100 units. For entry with (1) a 3- or 4-year Bachelor's degree in Food Science and/or Technology (AQF Level 7)
- (2) a 4-year Bachelor's Honours degree (AQF Level 8) or a Master's degree in a *cognate program (AQF Level 9) with fewer than 5 years of experience in the food industry, the volume of learning is 120 units. For entry with (1) a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma in Food Science and/or Technology with fewer than 5 years of experience in the food industry (AQF Level 8)
- (2) a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (AQF Level 8) in a *cognate program with at least 5 years of experience in the food industry, the volume of learning is 120 units. For entry with (1) a 3- or 4-year Bachelor's degree in *cognate programs (AQF Level 7), or (2) a Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma (AQF Level 8) in *cognate programs with fewer than 5 years of experience in the food industry, the volume of learning is 140 units. For entry with (1) a 3 or 4-year Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7), (2) 4-year Bachelor's Honours degree (AQF Level 8), (3) Graduate Certificate or Graduate diploma (AQF Level 8), or (4) Master's degree in a non-cognate discipline (AQF Level 9), with at least 5 years of experience working in the food industry, the volume of learning is 160 units. * Cognate programs can include: Dietetics
