Mining engineering is the design, supervision and management of coal, mineral and metal mines and their associated infrastructure. Modern mining engineers minimise damage to environments while balancing the optimum production and processing of the mined matter. A leading wealth producer for Australia and many parts of the world, mining refers to the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the earth, usually from an ore body, vein or coal seam. Students will gain a sound understanding of civil and mining engineering concepts in preparation for a career as a professional engineer. They will be equipped with the skills needed to design, construct and manage mining projects. The mining engineering degree is comprised of two years' study at UON. The remaining two years are undertaken at the University of New South Wales (UNSW) or the University of Wollongong (UOW)


In the first 2 years of studies, at UON, students will study mathematics, structural and environmental mechanics, geomechanics, technology and human values, surveying and computer programming. In second year students may apply through the University Admission Centre (UAC) to complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mining) at UNSW or UOW. Applications are subject to the normal admission requirements and offers are based on competitive assessment. After transferring, studies will include underground mining, surface mining, blasting, geology and mine ventilation, mine economics, mine planning, mine water, environmental impact, regulations and safety.

Standard entry requirements

Year 12 or equivalent. Alternative entry pathways may include approved TAFE studies, preparatory programs such as Newstep, Open Foundation or Tertiary Preparation Certificate. Assumed knowledge: HSC Mathematics (Band 5 or above) or equivalent. One science-related subject would also be an advantage (Physics or Chemistry preferred). Applicants who have achieved less than Mathematics Band 5 may be admitted to the program but may need to complete additional study to successfully complete the requirements of the program. Students who have completed HSC Mathematics General 2 may be admitted to the program but can expect to undertake additional studies to successfully complete the requirements of the program.

Study pathways

In second year students may apply through the University Admission Centre (UAC) to complete the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Mining) at UNSW or UOW. They can also elect to transfer to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Civil) at UON and receive full credit for courses they have already completed.
