Diagnostic radiographers are involved with many digital imaging systems, the most advanced being Magnetic Resonance Imaging. This is a very sensitive method of imaging some parts of the body and is a rapidly expanding speciality which allows the radiographer to be 'on the cutting edge' for advances in technology and associated research. This course will provide students with the knowledge and skills to translate referrals into images that enable an accurate diagnosis of a patient's condition. They will become familiar with varied equipment ranging from small or mobile X-ray machines to larger units like MRI, CT and cardiac suites. Diagnostic radiographers work closely with radiologists in imaging and treating all regions of the body and work with other medical specialists such as surgeons and cardiologists to perform imaging during operations. Radiography is a physically demanding profession and will require students to be able to move and handle patients.


Clinical placement: 24 to 26 weeks of clinical placement throughout the course. Students will be allocated to a variety of clinical sites in city and country areas. Some interstate placements are available.

  • Selection via ATAR. Recommended studies: Mathematics Advanced plus one of Biology, Chemistry, Physics.

Further information

Practical experience: A total of 48 weeks of placements is required to fulfil accreditation requirements. Students will complete clinical block placements in second, third and fourth years. Placements are integrated into the course and will be undertaken in both city and rural areas. Students will be responsible for additional costs, including accommodation and travel. Career opportunities: Examples include diagnostic radiographers in the hospital system and private practice.
