Flinders University

Type of institution: University/Higher Education Institution
Level: Undergraduate
CRICOS: 00114A

Health systems are changing to embrace both information and engineering technology. This program will develop student's skills and knowledge in ICT, engineering and health sciences, through health informatics and computer science. It draws on Flinders' strengths in medical science, health science and ICT to provide students with the skills and knowledge to succeed in a rapidly changing and increasingly technology based health industry. Digital health systems are becoming ever more prominent in society, not only in hospitals and health care providers, but in personal consumables, such as fitness watches, mobile phone app pedometers, and heart rate monitors. Add to that developments in telemedicine and health and medical big data and the career opportunities are enormous.

Students undertake topics in computing, statistics and information and communications technology as well as a range of health related topics. This course also contains specialist health information management topics including decision support systems in medicine, electronic medical records, health analytics, health systems security and telemedicine technology. After three years students may exit with a Bachelor of Information Technology. In fourth year, students undertake further specialised topics and a digital health-related research project in an area of interest. During this year students are able to work closely with a leading academic and research staff and with industry. Students present the results of their research in a thesis.
