Data science is often referred to as the “fourth paradigm” of science. It applies advanced analytical techniques, including computational and statistical methods, data mining and knowledge discovery, together with specific domain knowledge, to extract knowledge and insight from large quantities of structured and unstructured data collected by organisations, the Internet and social media. Data scientists provide competitive advantage and allow businesses and governments to apply knowledge and actionable insights across a broad range of application areas. The course articulates with the 72 unit Master of Data Science and the sequentially developed topics enable progression through the two awards.

Students complete six core (compulsory) topics and two option topics chosen from a range of option topics available. These topics aim to provide students with the ability to critically analyse and evaluate data stores to solve enterprise problems and provide knowledge in both the theoretical and the practical aspects of data science.
