HLTPAT002 Perform Venous Blood Collection

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to confirm collection requirements, prepare client and equipment, and perform routine blood collections using venous blood collection.This unit applies to any individual for whom blood collection is part of the job role. They may be working in collection centres, in hospitals or in other health care environments such as nurses,medical researchers, IVF clinics, etc.This unit relates to collections from adults of varied ages and genders, adolescents and children over5 years of age.It does not include collections from babies,neonates, arterial collections or collections made via artificial access devices such as central lines,peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) lines,or intra venous (IV) catheter.

Structure

This 2-day workshop covers the following:▪ Practical demonstration under 1:1 observation of the 3 types of venepuncture – Needle & Syringe, Vacutainer & Butterfly – following Standard Operating Procedures within the industry▪ Hand hygiene and infection control practices▪ WHS for Pathology Collections▪ Patient communication and pre-test criteria▪ Order of draw▪ Information on “Prepare, receive and dispatch” practices. This unit of competency includes 35 hours of practical placement which can be organised by AHT atone of our placement facilities (Monday to Friday in one block of time) or can be undertaken in a student's workplace if it is suitable.

Standard entry requirements

Students must be over 18 years of age to conduct practical work placement.▪ Police checks are required prior to commencing practical placement. If a student has aDisclosable Court Outcome registered against their name, we are unable to assist withplacement as industry will not accept students without a clear record. This requirement is notnegotiable. Please note, in Victoria this includes any offence that may have occurred up to 10years ago and will show offences that state they are “without conviction”.▪ Students are required to obtain a volunteer Working with Children’s check (WWC) to commenceplacement.▪ Students are required to be able to access appropriate technology (including a computer).Students must have sufficient digital literacy. Further details will be discussed upon application▪ The student must have documented Hep B protection & annual flu vaccination which studentsmust undertake at their own cost and provide to AHT as part of the requirements for practicalplacement
