This qualification is part of the Agriculture, Horticulture and Conservation and Land Management Training Package. It provides an occupational outcome for industries and agencies in rural and regional Australia. Depending on the units selected, individuals can be employed not only in rural industries but also other rural and regional sectors, such as local government, tourism, hospitality, transport, construction, community services, information technology and metals.

CfAT's principal objective is research into appropriate technologies for remote communities. CfAT's research, design, training and development focus is on securing sustainable livelihoods through appropriate technology. Research and development is in the fields of water supply and quality, energy, communication, shelter, waste and sanitation, transport education, training and capacity building.
